SAFE INSULATION REMOVAL BEFORE REINSTALLATION
Old insulation that has been damaged by water, contaminated by pests, or simply degraded over decades cannot be insulated over. It has to come out first. We safely remove and dispose of existing insulation, prepare the cavity for new installation, and complete the full retrofit as one coordinated project. Required for many rebate-eligible upgrades.
SOMETIMES THE OLD INSULATION HAS TO GO FIRST
We use HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment to remove old insulation safely without contaminating the rest of the building. The removed material is disposed of per state and local regulations. Once the cavity is clean and any underlying damage is addressed (water sources fixed, pest entry points sealed, framing repaired), we install new insulation and air sealing as a coordinated project. Many utility rebate programs require this approach for the new installation to qualify for funding.
— WHEN REMOVAL IS NECESSARYInsulation has a useful life. Properly installed cellulose can last 30 to 60 years. Fiberglass, somewhat longer. But water damage, rodent infestation, mold growth, or improper original installation can compromise insulation long before its design life ends. In any of those cases, attempting to add new insulation on top of damaged or contaminated material is the wrong solution. The damaged material has to come out first.
How we do the removal
✓ HEPA-filtered vacuum removal, no airborne contamination
✓ Removal of water-damaged, pest-infested, or mold-affected insulation
✓ Proper disposal per Illinois and local regulations
✓ Cavity inspection and remediation before reinstallation
✓ Coordinated with new insulation install as one project
✓ Often required for rebate-eligible upgrades on older buildings
✓ Tenant access coordinated to minimize disruption
— THE SCOPE6 Signs Your Building Needs Insulation Removal
Not every building needs insulation removed before new install. But some absolutely do. Recognizing the signs early saves you from paying twice and protects the new installation from being compromised.
Water Damage
Visible water stains in the attic or wall cavities. Past roof leaks, plumbing failures, or ice dam damage all soak insulation. Wet insulation loses R-value permanently and becomes a breeding ground for mold growth.
Pest Infestation
Mice, squirrels, raccoons, and bats love to nest in insulation. They contaminate it with urine, droppings, and carcasses. Hantavirus, salmonella, and parasites are real health risks. Pest-contaminated insulation must be removed.
Mold Growth
Black or green discoloration on or around insulation. Musty smells from attic or basement spaces. Mold spores spread through HVAC systems and trigger allergic reactions, asthma, and chronic respiratory complaints from tenants.
Severe Settling
Cellulose more than 30 years old that has compressed to half its original depth. Once insulation loses density, it loses R-value. Topping it off does not restore performance. Removal and full reinstall is the right call.
Knob-and-Tube Wiring
Old electrical wiring with insulation packed around it. National Electric Code requires insulation be removed from contact with knob-and-tube wiring due to fire risk. Required before any new insulation can be installed.
Smoke or Odor
Insulation absorbs and holds odors permanently. Past fire damage, heavy smoking, or chemical spills can saturate insulation. Removal is the only way to eliminate the source rather than mask it.
From Old Insulation to New Performance
Assessment
BPI-certified analyst inspects the existing insulation, identifies contamination type and extent, and recommends the right scope. No cost, no commitment.
Safe Removal
High-powered HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment removes the existing insulation without spreading contamination through the building. Crew is fully PPE-equipped.
Cavity Remediation
With the cavity empty, we address the root cause: seal pest entry points, fix water sources, repair framing damage, and clean affected surfaces.
Reinstall
New insulation installed to current building code or above. Documented for utility rebate submission. Full project completed by one team.
